Manager Wayne Burnett has said he was pleased to see Dagenham pick up another win against Southend, but he still wants more from the team.
Rhys Murphy grabbed the only goal of the game just after the half hour mark, but Southend were reduced to ten men only a few minutes before he found the net, so Burnett was hopeful that we'd go on to secure a victory by a larger margin, however we were unable to extend our lead.
Speaking to the press following the match, the gaffer explained that whilst the result put a smile on his face, our overall performance on the night wasn't something he was overly pleased with.
'It's going to be difficult against 10 men because they get behind the ball but in the second half they have better chances than us. We can play a lot better and I let them know that because we didn't have any penetration at all. The disappointing thing for me was we were inviting pressure and we have to be a lot braver on the ball.'
With that said Burnett added that he wasn't going to criticise the players because they are young and still learning, and he knows we'll have matches like this where we should make far more of it than we do. Despite the performance, we still took the win and held out and that is a positive for him, despite the mistakes that were made.
Goalscorer Rhys Murphy has also been in the press saying that it was worth the mini battering he took in the game so we could come away with all three points.
22 year old Murphy was of course on the end of the 26th minute challenge by Mark Phillips which saw the defender dismissed for his tackle. Murphy says he doesn't remember much about the tackle at all as it happened so quickly, but having spoken to his team mates they believe the red card was thoroughly justified, so at least his aches and pains were of benefit to the club ultimately.
