Burnett - Pick Ourselves Up Again
An opening day three nil defeat to Morecambe left manager Wayne Burnett saying that we need to pick ourselves up and go again.
Speaking to the Official Site following the defeat, the manager said what was more disappointing for him was the manner of the defeat rather than just the scoreline.
'It's the first game of the season and to get beat in the manner of which we did is disappointing. Performance in the first half was okay and we switched off in the second half.'
Burnett goes on to say that he doesn't want to make excuses for how we drifted off in the second period, because simply put we shouldn't have at those key moments but his biggest concern was we did it almost immediately on the restart for the second period in terms of 'almost relinquishing possession' and that should've been a wake up call but it wasn't and they went up the other end of put it in the net.
'We didn't start correctly in the second half and when we conceded those two goals, it's hard to come back to, whatever team you are.'
With new summer signing Jamie Cureton carrying a lot of hope for his goal threat, the gaffer also said that he doesn't feel we helped him because despite his movement and efforts to try and get into good positions, we just didn't give him enough service or we weren't on the same wave length in spotting runs quick enough, but of course hopefully that will be something that comes as the players train more and get used to him as a player.
Despite the size of the scoreline, it's not all doom and gloom though and whilst he admits he's still trying to source a wide player and a striker to help bolster us up front, he believes our work ethic will see us through, we just have to be 'smarter' not so 'naive' and once we get our decision making better in moments things should turn our way.
